D.O. Cigales

Although there were already vineyards in the tenth century, and it is known that in 1888 more than 15 million kilos of grapes were produced in the area, the origin of the D.O. dates from 1991. The territory of the D.O. extends from part of the municipal area of ​​Valladolid (Pago “El Berrocal”), to the small town of Dueñas, in Palencia. It covers Cabezón de Pisuerga, Cigales, Corcos del Valle, Cubillas de Santa Marta, Fuensaldaña, Mucientes, Quintanilla de Trigueros, San Martín de Valvení, Trigueros del Valle and Valoria la Buena.

Frutos Villar arrived in Cigales in 1960, with the foundation of our main winery which currently has 105 hectares of Tempranillo vineyard in its entirety. The good work of generations has produced the wines Calderona and Conde Ansúrez – D.O. Cigales – which have placed Frutos Villar as the leading winery in this D.O..

Since the 60’s
The climate of the region is continental with an Atlantic influence, characterized by frequent thermal oscillations. Rainfall is irregular with an annual average of 407 mm., and in summer there are intense droughts. Winters are hard and long, with frequent frosts and fogs throughout the season.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Frutos Villar family continued in their pursuit of renewal and progress by setting up a second winery in the lands of Cigales (Valladolid, Spain), a wine area with Designation of Origin, offering fresh and aromatic wines.

In their constant concern for the quality of their products, the Frutos Villar family carry out a thorough control of the vine, investing in its own vineyards – 99 hectares – and adopting the most modern and advanced technology.

Thus, tradition and technology are two concepts that define the good performance of Frutos Villar, which presents its best wines today thanks to the care of expert hands and the knowledge of many years.
